Start with everyday life

A list of rooms does not tell the whole story. Write down what your day looks like: where you work, how you relax, whether you enjoy cooking and how often you have guests. This helps define how spaces relate to one another.

Separate needs from inspiration

Collect a few images of homes or interiors you like. Beside each, note what caught your attention: light, materials, proportions or storage. The same photograph can mean different things to different people.

Be clear about constraints

Discuss your budget, timing and anything you do not want to change. Set priorities too: what is essential and what you could do without. This makes proposed solutions easier to assess.

Bring the materials you already have

A floor plan, measurements, room photographs or information about the plot will help explain the starting point. You do not need complete documentation for the first meeting. You can agree what else is needed together.

Agree the next step

Before you finish, ask about the scope, stages, feedback process and information needed for a quote. A good conversation ends with a clear understanding of what happens next.
